The First Congregational Church in Billerica |
From
the Pastor |
"The best is yet to come"
This is what one nearby minister repeatedly told
his congregation as he prepared to retire after a long and fruitful pastorate.
As good as things had been, he wanted them to know that God had even greater
plans for their future.
Here too the best is on its way! After these many months of time for grieving
and adjusting to change (some of them painful), I believe this church is now
in a very good place. The mood of late is one of joy and positive anticipation
-- exactly what we'd want to see happening on the threshold of a new pastorate.
One of the places we saw that positive spirit was in the celebration of Confirmation
Sunday. So many of you remarked on the beauty of the service and the lovely
luncheon hosted by the Religious Education Committee. Thank you, thank you to
all who helped. The special treatment this church gives its confirmands is truly
awesome.
On the last Sunday of April we had another happy occasion as we dedicated the new Allen organ and celebrated the gifts of our choir and organist. Reversing the usual order of things, the congregation sang to the choir under the able leadership of Maestro's Jackie and Stephanie. This positive and hopeful spirit is evident throughout your many ministries:
The Search Committee has reached the interview stage.
The high school class is well along in its preparations for the summer mission trip to Colorado.
The Mission Committee is hosting a speaker on homelessness May 11.
The Deacons are exploring a fall retreat.
The Music Committee is ready to begin a Choir Director search.
The Cabinet is continuing to become more cohesive and effective.
The Stewardship Committee is launching a program to recognize our unsung heroes
And much much more. . .
Thanks be to God for all that is happening now.
And thanks be to God that THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

Notes
from the Diaconate For the second month, a Confirmand visited the open portion of the Diaconate meeting as part of our church's education in the meaning of Confirmation. On Sunday, a week before Confirmation, the Diaconate hosted a lively dinner for the Confumands, their mentors, and some family members. Confirmation was a moving experience for the assisting deacons, and we hope will be one of the Confirmands' most important faith memories. The greeting line after the service was long and joyous as the congregation welcomed Kyle Corkery, Maranda Keesler, Marc Piro, and Michelle Button.
Two deacons have been working with our Music Committee during this time of change. Music has always been a key part of our worship services and will continue to be as we transition to our new electronic organ. We got a chance to preview it on Sunday April 20th, and formally dedicated it on April 27th, in a service also honoring the contributions of our choir. A byproduct of the organ installation, new additions to our speaker system will help spread words and music more evenly throughout the Sanctuary. The new organ holds promise for a continuing, growing variety of musical experiences during worship:
Have you noticed that copies of the Holy Bible have been placed in most pews? We could use a few more Bibles, so if any of you have extra Bibles you'd like to donate, please let us know.
We will be filling the pulpit on three occasions this summer. Ordained ministers will be needed for Communion Sundays on June 1st and August 3rd, but a lay person could lead the service on July 27th. Please speak to any deacon if you have a candidate minister you would like us to contact, or suggestions for the July 27th service.
At our last meeting, the Diaconate discussed the multi-layered issues which have brought the UCC into national headlines recently. Posted on the deacon's bulletin board is a copy of the full-page ad run by the UCC in the April 2nd edition of the NY Times. Discussing the issues has helped raise our awareness and focus us on the mission and diverse needs of our congregation. We'd also like to do a better job of serving the increasingly diverse community that Billerica is becoming.
On May 4th, deacons Christa Brown and Jean Button will be assisting the Minister with a New Member Class in preparation for New Member Sunday on May 18th. See the Minister if you're ready for membership.
"For I was a stranger and you welcomed me" Matthew 25:35

The Search Committee has been working very hard this month reading, reviewing and evaluating profiles. We performed a mock interview to help us fine tune our interviewing skills for when we start the interview process with our first prospective candidates. We have formulated interview questions to use during the screening process and will coordinate these questions with each candidate's profile to help us determine the best fit for our congregation.
Each member of the Search Committee spends many hours each week at home preparing for our weekly meetings. To date we have received 27 profiles, 17 have been from female candidates and 10 have been from male candidates. From all received so far, 17 did not match the profile that our congregation identified as our particular criteria. These 17 candidates received a letter thanking them for their interest but also informing them that their qualifications were not a match to our profile. We have asked the 10 that have matched to send us a CD or tape of a recent sermon along with a written sermon for our committee to listen to and read to help us decide if they would be a good choice to call for a first interview.
It takes each Search Committee member approximately 1 hour to initially read a profile. We receive these profiles through our home email. We take notes on each profile so that we are prepared to discuss each one at our weekly meetings before we decide to pursue the candidate. We receive 5 to 7 profiles each week, sometimes more. We all meet as a group weekly, usually for 2 to 3 hours, and carefully go over each profile before we unanimously either decide to contact the candidate for more information or send our regrets due to qualification mismatch with our profile. We are all working together as a team representing our entire congregation. We all have the same common goals and we hope our process will be quick and efficient but know that patience and trust in the Lord is what will get us to our goal of finding our new pastor.
Exciting news for the month of May is that we will be interviewing our first potential candidate on Monday, May 5th. We have received three more profiles since our last meeting, which reminds our group to keep an open mind and stick to our guidelines since we are looking for the best candidate to fit our church's spiritual needs. Lastly, we are asking our congregation to always keep us in your prayers. We need your strength, support, patience, and guidance during this process.
Blessings to all- Your Search Committee

Thompson and Jeremy Verrocchio

The Ministerial Review. Committee is preparing a warrant article for the spring business meeting to propose that our name be changed to the "Congregational Relations Committee." The purpose of this change is to more accurately reflect the role of the committee as a center of communication and mediation on behalf of the entire congregation as well as the Minister.
We will continue to be responsible for the review of the Minister, but will
also encourage open communication from the congregation, and assist or direct
individuals to the proper channels to resolve any concerns.

MISSION MOMENTS
Our overall goal is to tell you where, how, and why we decide to spend your
the various causes to which we contribute. Transparency and openness are our
responsibility to this congregation. We hope you find these talks helpful, useful,
and informative. We welcome your feedback
PANTRY COLLECTION
We are running out of superlatives. The food pantry collection for April totaled
158 items. While we are all feeling some "belt tightening" in these
TOUGH economic times, your commitment to those in need never wavers. We remain
one of the b~st kept secrets in Billerica. May God bless you for this and all
the good things you are doing. Our next collection is June 1st..
THE OUTDOOR CHURCH
This is a ministry to. the poor/homeless in Cambridge and Boston.. They bring
the word of God to people who because of fear or shame will not enter a church
building. I made a presentation to the Missions Committee requesting funding
for this group. The committee (despite my eloquence) wanted to see for themselves
before committing any of your money (this is a tough group). So ... we will
travel to Porter Square on Sunday, May 4th to join in the worship . service
at the Outdoor Church. We will bring sandwiches and socks and invite any of
you to come along. Also, on May 11th the founding Pastor, Jed Mannis, .will
be here to pJ!'each. Come, learn, and enjoy!
PROJECT CHACOCENTE
With Mother's Day (and. Father's Day) fast approaching, we remind you that we
have greeting cards that you may purchase as a gift for. your parent. 100% of
the money raised goes directly to assist a Nicaraguan family to become independent.
See Bob or Linda Miner to view/purchase a card.
RECYCLING
Is there someone in the congregation who has a serious commitment to "conservation"
and would be willing to spearhead a church-wide effort to promote recycling
and to reduce our energy use? Currently, we recycle nothing because our bins
are used for trash as well. Except for the organist, we purchase all
incandescent bulbs that waste energy and raise our bills. We purchased no fair
trade items for our coff~e hour. As you can see, there is an extensive list
of things we might begin to do IF someone takes the lead. Is that you? If so,
see Bob Miner or the Pastor.
WEB SITE
Take a look at the new and improved Missions portion of the church's web site.
We've updated the text and we've added pictures. We think its "kinda neat"!
DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that: the salary of a full-time minimum wage earner in 2007 was
$12,168?
The cost to rent a 1-bedroom home in Boston was $24,000.

Senior High Class Parents Meeting for Mission TripSunday May 4th 11:15 - 12:00 in the Ladies Parlor |
All Senior High Class Parents are encouraged to attend an information session about the Mission Trip we will be taking this summer. Senior High Students will be travelling to Alamosa CO, August 17 through August 24, to work at Habitat for Humanity and the La Puente Shelter. They will also be taking one fun day in the largest intermountain valley in the world and perhaps seeing the Great Sand Dunes National Monument.
While you may not think of Colorado as a needy place, we have found that the homeless in Colorado are no less homeless than the homeless in New York City. Folks live on the riverbank of the Rio Grande river digging caves in the side of the riverbank for shelter. Homeless shelters in this rural area are 120-150 miles apart. Homelessness is less the result of factories closing and more the result of family farms failing often put out of business by corporate farms. Most government funding goes to places you'd expect, the big cities, not to places like Alamosa, a town of 8,000 - one fifth the size of Billerica. The summers are short here and the winter's long and cold. There is no public transportation. This is not an easy place to be homeless or poor. We hope to share what we have with the people in Alamosa and bring hope and love from the First Congregational Church in Billerica. Thank you for your support in our effort to prepare for this ministry. We are really excited!!

"I don't have time." I
hear this often and have used this excuse myself in the past when asked to give
of my time. The truth is we have the time if it is something we really want to
do. If we were asked by friends or family to do something for them we would make
time. Why is this? It becomes a matter of our priorities.
"I can't do that." How many of us have said this? I have heard this also. Sometimes we say we can't when really we can. We just don't want to. We can do anything if we just remember this phrase: I can d.o all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).
This year Stewardship would like to recognize those who have given of their time to the church. We have many volunteers who work tirelessly for the church. Some of these are seen each week because they are on a committee, but many are not seen. They give of their time in various ways without the commitment of a committee. They don't say "I don't have time." They say "Yes, I can do that."
We need the Congregation's help with this important project. It is important to appreciate the people who make this church so special. Please fill out the volunteer recognition form and let us know who has done something that should be recognized. A drop box will be available each week through the month of May in Dale Hall, or the form can be delivered to the Stewardship Committee mailbox.
Please let our volunteers know they are appreciated.
Monies collected through March 2008 are as follows:
| General Fund | $15,507.80 |
| Missions | $ 1575.00 |
| Building | $ 740.00 |
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the support of the Church.

Sunday School curriculum surveys have been distributed to the parents and teachers in the classrooms. If you have not received one, please see your child's teacher for a copy or print out a copy by clicking on the above links. Surveys are due by June 1st and should be given to your child's teacher or placed in the RE Committee mailbox. Please take the time to complete the survey. Your comments and recommendations are important as we make revisions to the curriculum. Any questions or concerns, please contact Lynn Gaudet 978-667-2008 or Shannon Fisher 978-663-1848.
CALLING ALL CHILDREN: The Children's Choir will be starting rehearsals for Children's Sunday beginning on May 18th in the Chapel at 9:30am. All children are welcome to join us, especially those who have sung in the choir this past year. This is your opportunity to show off your talent and to celebrate all your hard work. Any questions, please contact April Goss-Baker 978-670-6035.
CALLING ALL TEACHERS: Have you ever wanted to find a way to give back to your church for doing something special for you? Have you ever wanted to work with children or help create an inspiring environment for religious education through teaching? If you said yes to the above questions, then the RE Committee would like to hear from you. The RE Committee will be soon looking for volunteers for the upcoming school year for teachers (weekly or every other week), substitute teaching, classroom helpers and nursery coverage. As a congregation, we have pledged to raise our children with the values and religious teachings of the church. In order to continue this commitment, we need your help. There are a great number of dedicated disciples in this school who want to learn, and an extra pair of hands is always welcome in assisting us to provide the best religious education possible. Would you consider being part of our Sunday school family? You may find that is very rewarding and fun. Any questions, please contact Pat Rogers 978-663-8121 or the RE Committee.
Congratulations to Kyle Corkery, Marc Piro, Maranda Keesler and Michelle Button on their confirmation.
Thank you to Suzie Carmichael, Penne Shea, Nikole Hewitt and Catie Button for sharing their time and dedication by acting as mentors.
The RE Committee would like to specially thank the individuals who helped with the Confirmation collation. Your generosity and donated time were greatly appreciated. With your help, we were able to arrange a delightful collation for the confimands and their families. With our deepest gratitude, thank you again for your commitment and generosity.

So
What's Your Excuse? The Diaconate is trying to make it easier for everyone to wear a name tag And we want to eliminate as many of the excuses that for not wearing them as possible.
For example:
"I don't like putting a pin through my clothes."
Ask and your holder will be changed to one with a clip or one that hangs over your head."I lost mine."
Ask and you will receive a new one."The color clashes with my tie"
Let us know what color you want and we will make one of that color."I want one that expresses my individuality"
We have some other designs that you can choose from, or supply us with what you want as a background and we will make one with that background."I forgot and left it on my bureau"
You can fill out a temporary one, and we will make a second one. Eventually the pile of name tags on the bureau will get so high that you won't forget!
Remember: Wear your name tags for others as you would want them to wear
one for you.

Music
Notes The Music Committee has had a very busy month. Our new Allen Organ has been installed and is now being used on Sunday mornings for worship. Our prayers were answered when we discovered we could have the new electronic organ installed right next to our traditional pipe organ without sacrificing the pipe organ. The prep work went smoothly with several volunteers helping with the carpentry, etc., in a short amount of time. Thank you to the volunteers who. helped us with the organ installation: Ed Reinecker, Wayne Thompson, Harold Phippen, Art Macintosh and Gene Guild. .
Our committee thanks all of you for all your help in making our Organ Dedication and Choir Appreciation Day successful. To all those who helped with the service, contributed to the collation, sang for the choir or helped with clean-up, please know that you are appreciated! A special thanks to Elliot Brown and the senior choir for your dedication to our Sunday worship services.
The choir is always looking for new members and we invite you to come to a rehearsal on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. Auditions are not necessary-just a desire to sing with a caring group. If you cannot commit to singing every week, please consider singing during special seasons such as Christmas and Easter. We also invite you to sing during the summer when the choir takes a break.
Now our committee looks forward to its search for a pennanent choir director. We are busily working on a job description to present to prospective applicants. We ask for your prayers and encouragement as we seek out the person who will best complement our choir. We are hoping to find a well-qualified professional director who will also be willing to sing on occasion. In the meantime, our organist, Elliot Brown, has kindly agreed to direct and accompany the choir.
We also encourage you to attend the children's choir rehearsal on Sunday mornings
with your children. Under the direction of April GossBaker, the children practice
in the chapel for 30 minutes every Sunday morning just before Sunday School.
They would love to have your children join them! They plan to sing for us on
Mother's Day.
Sincerely,
The Music Committee

At our October Congregational Meeting, I opened that meeting with the Behavioral Covenant developed from our Walking in the Way of Peace program. This covenant was created over a few meetings by the attendees of this church and reflects what they felt was important for our church, and is not just something handed down from Walking in the Way, the UCC, or other organizations. The tenants presented in this behavioral covenant were first used during the Sabbath Day House issue and served the church well.
Some people had not seen the covenant before our October meeting and they requested a copy. Please keep this and refer to it as you see the need.
Remembering our purpose as a Church and our Biblical grounding, we covenant to be peace-makers by
Speaking...
The Truth...
In Love...
As a community of faith...
Use these well and God Bless,
