The First Congregational Church in Billerica |
From
the Pastor |
"For everything there is a season....."
The Book of Ecclesiastes tells us that for everything there
is a season. Besides being summer, this seems to be the season for waiting.
At this stage of an interim ministry congregations feel like they're all dressed
up, with the table set and the dinner almost ready - anxious for the honored
guest to arrive. But as of yet, no footsteps on the walk, no ring of the doorbell.
The Search Committee has been diligent in reviewing applications, but the selection
process has a way to go. While they've had dozens of applications, some of these
ministers aren't a good match. Others look good "on paper" but appear
less satisfactory when their sermons are reviewed or they're met in person.
Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, ministers who looked promising remove themselves
from consideration. The process is filled with unknowns.
Many years ago, before I was ordained, I served on a Search Committee. We spent
months reading profiles and holding interviews. Finally we agreed on a candidate.
But after initially accepting, the man later changed his mind and decided not
to come after all. It certainly was discouraging, but in the end it turned out
for the best. Sometimes God's timetable is not the same as ours.
As we patiently wait, we'll wind down a bit over the summer
in terms of church "work," but we'll continue to welcome one another
every Sunday as we worship God and continue to care for the spiritual and other
needs of our members. Thank you to all who work so hard for this church. Our
committees are all functioning very well, and the spirit of the church remains
high.
Be assured that in God's season the waiting will be over, and a new minister
will be here. Meanwhile, have a happy and restful summer.
Rev Goss will be on vacation these dates during the summer:
During her absence the deacons will be in charge of handling pastoral emergencies.
Guest ministers will lead worship on June 1 and on August 3.

New Members Welcomed in May |
On May 18 seven people joined the church. In welcoming them, Rev. Goss said, "It's especially encouraging to see people joining now, before a new minister is called, because it means they're committed whatever the future holds.
The new members are:
Kevin Button
Kevin is the husband of Jean Button, one of our deacons, and father of four
daughters: Laura, Catie, Michelle, and Diana. He's been a resident of this area
for 43 years. Though he grew up as an Episcopalian, he's attended this church
for 27 years. Kevin works as store manager at O'Connor's Hardware. For recreation
he enjoys woodworking, old cars, and sports He's looking forward to serving
this church wherever he's needed.
Virginia Paavola
Ginny grew up as a Methodist but has been attending here a long time. She is
a treasured member of Aim-Hi. A resident of this area for 55 years, she lives
in Chelmsford. She has two daughters (including Linda Simmons, who's also joining
today), two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Before retiring she
cooked at the high school for 20 years. For fun, Ginny enjoys knitting.
Sarah Odell
Sarah is the daughter of Stephanie and William Odell. She is joining today with
her mom and her grandmother, Eleanor Sievert. On Sunday mornings Sarah can be
seen volunteering in the nursery with her mom. She is employed as a cashier.
Chief among her interests are reading and writing.
Stephanie Odell
Stephanie has served this church in the past through the RE Committee, and she
currently volunteers in the nursery. An office manager, she enjoys websurfing,
family, pets and reading. She has lived in this area all her life and the Congregational
tradition has always been her spiritual home.
Eleanor Sievert
Eleanor lives here in Billerica and has resided in the area for 45 years. She
grew up as a Baptist. She is currently retired but enjoys reading, knitting,
and swimming. She is the mother of Stephanie Odell, who is also joining today.
Gerald Simmons, Jr.
Gerry is joining by letter of transfer from the Central Congregational Church
in Chelmsford. He and his wife Linda live in Chelmsford. Gerry has lived in
the Billerica area all his life and grew up in a Congregational church. He now
works in the banking industry as a staff accountant. He's been active here as
usher, choir member, and participant in the talent show. At his former church
he served as moderator and treasurer. He enjoys singing, reading, and traveling.
Linda Simmons
Linda, wife of Gerry Simmons, is the daughter of Ginny Paavola. She grew up
in this church. She is joining today by letter of transfer from Central Congregational
in Chelmsford. Like her husband, she's lived in this area all her life. She
is employed as a clerical worker in the banking industry. She enjoys reading,
traveling, and watching movies.

Notes
from the Diaconate As we head into the long and lazy summer months we have time to reflect on the experiences we've shared this year and time to anticipate the changes ahead of us. There are new faces among the officers and committee membership. People are accepting the unique challenges of maintaining our church and strengthening it for the future. There have been many subtle and some major changes as we prepare for a new settled minister. We all need to actively participate in the work of the congregation as we close out one cycle and move forward.
On May 18th we recognized new members who have joined us in the covenant of this congregation. The new members each bring their own gifts to add to our assemblage. The rewards and reasons for membership are many. Some friends have been with us for years and are taking this opportunity to declare their continued support. Others have recently begun to attend and are allowing us to witness their presence as devoted Christians. We welcome Kevin Button, Stephanie and Sarah Odell, Eleanor Sievert, Ginny Paavola, Jerry and Linda Simmons.
Summer may be a time for reflection but it will be a time of new beginning
as well. Already scheduled for this summer we have several special services.
There will be parents, godparents and friends of three families bringing their
children for Baptism. We'll see the renewal of wedding vows and three weddings.
We will be filling the pulpit on three Sundays while Rev. Dr. Goss is away.
On Communion Sundays, June 1st and August 3rd , we'll meet Rev. Dr. Dick Phelps
and Rev. Beverly Weinhold. We will have a lay person(s) lead the service on
July 2nd. Schedules for the baptisms and weddings are posted
elsewhere in this Lantern.
Deacons Andrew Jennings, Jean Button, and Cindy Tomlin attended the Andover Association Annual Meeting earlier this month. A discussion topic centered on understanding local demographics encouraging us to consider the many facets of diversity in our community. The deacons hope to serve the congregation through understanding the diverse needs, qualities and expectations of present and . potential members.a
The deacons are studying our existing wedding and funeral policies which haven't been updated in years. In the past, many details were not documented so we're piecing things together from our memory and comparison with our sister churches. We hope to facilitate your planning around these life events by preparing brochures similar to the baptism brochure already posted on our bulletin board across from the Pastor's office.
"For I was a stranger and you welcomed me" Matthew 25:35
*********************************

The Search Committee wants to find someone we all can enthusiastically recommend as having the skills that this~ church has indicated it needs for the future. We have a few candidates that we are looking closer at, but there are many additional steps in this process; for instance, contacting references, setting up neutral pulpits, and first, second or maybe even third interviews, before one can even consider presenting a candidate to the congregation.
Many other churches are going through this same process, with the same pool of candidates and the candidates, too, are reading many churches' profiles and going through the interview process with them. Therefore, they may not always get back to us in a timely manner. We continue to ask for your prayers and patience.
We do not want to indicate that we are in the final stretch by any means, but we know that things tend to slow down in the summer, so we thought we would like to suggest some ways you can help us now and ways to get ready for the new pastor.
We will be bringing prospective ministers to see the church, when others are not around. We are hoping that each & every one of us can help to keep the church clean & picked up. This includes the classrooms, parlor, kitchen & Dale Hall, etc. as well as the sanctuary.
The Trustees can have a tentative package ready for us to just punch in the figures.
Each committee can think of ways that would make a minister feel welcome and perhaps eventually create a report on what your committee has been doing.
We understand the Congregational Relations Committee is preparing a packet to help the new minister find his or her way around the area.
We think it would be nice for the congregation to be able to contribute to a welcome basket as a gift for when the new minister arrives. Items that could be included are: our Pictorial Directory, gift certificates for restaurants, lists of our favorite shopping places, home made foods, local foods, and I'm sure you'll think of lots more items. We hope some individual or committee will take this on.
Again, we want to be sure you understand that we are not even close to the final stage, but just want to give our church time to prepare for the eventual welcome.
Blessings to all,
Your Search Committee
Larry Carroll, Lynne Hildreth, Phyllis Jennings, Denise Smith,
Diane Thompson and Jeremy Verrocchio

As the Search Committee continues their work, the Congregational Relations Committee (formerly the Ministerial Review Committee) invites the Congregation to begin preparing for our new settled Pastor. Ways in which the Congregation can help prepare for the next settled Pastor include:
We have been working with Rev. Dr Goss on setting up a hospital and rehabilitation center list, with directions to each, as we are a far-spread church. This will make the ministry of visitation a bit less complicated for the new minister.
As requested by the Search Committee at the Spring Meeting, if Committees write up summaries of responsibilities and current status of the group's work, these could be given to the new minister to be brought up to speed more quickly.
If you have other ideas on how we can best prepare for our new minister, please contact Jenny Carmichael (978-262-0251, Jenny Carmichael) or drop a note in the Congregational Relations Committee's mail box.
Thank you.

MISSION MOMENTS
Our overall goal is to tell you where, how, and why we decide to spend your
the various causes to which we contribute. Transparency and openness are our
responsibility to this congregation. We hope you find these talks helpful, useful,
and informative. We welcome your feedback
PANTRY COLLECTION
We are running out of superlatives. The food pantry collection for April totaled
158 items and for May 141 items. While we are all feeling some "belt tightening"
in these TOUGH economic times, your commitment to those in need never wavers.
We remain one of the best kept secrets in Billerica. May God bless you for this
and all the good things you are doing. Our next collection is July 6th and we
will collect each first Sunday in the month thereafter. Since this is the final
Lantern until fall, we remind you of the importance of our pantry collections
during the summer. Attendance drops off; people are away for vacation, yet the
needs on the poor increase. With the closing of schools for the summer, free/reduced
school breakfasts and lunches disappear. This puts additional pressure on cash
strapped families scrambling to put food on the table. With this congregation,
we know that's all that needs to be said.
THE OUTDOOR CHURCH
This is a ministry to the poor/homeless in Cambridge and Boston.. They bring
the word of God to people who because of fear or shame will not enter a church
building. It was a pleasure to have the Rev. Jed Mannis preach on Sunday, May
11th; we hope you found it interesting and informative. We on the Missions Committee
were so pleased to be able to trave1 to Porter Square to take part in a church
service with the homeless on May 4th. It is graphic and heart wrenching, yet
it is uplifting and encouraging to be present with the outcasts and to be part
of letting them know they are precious in the sight of God. These pastors walk
the fine line between approval of behavior and acceptance of the people.
Thanks to your generosity we were able to bring 5 dozen pairs of socks, dozens
of assorted soaps and toiletries and 2 dozen sandwiches. Once again, you give
to people you don't know. . .but you know of the need and respond.
RECYCLING
Is there someone in the congregation who has a serious commitment to "conservation"
and would be willing to spearhead a church-wide effort to promote recycling
and to reduce our energy use? Currently, we recycle nothing because our bins
are used for trash as well. Except for the organist, we purchase all incandescent
bulbs that waste energy and raise our bills. We purchased no fair trade items
for our coffee hour. As you can see, there is an extensive list of things we
might begin to do IF someone takes the lead. Is that you? If so, see Bob Miner
or the Pastor.
CONTRIBUTIONS
At our most recent meeting, in your name, we awarded grants of $300.00 to the
Lowell Hispanic Church, $200.00 to the House of Hope, $150.00 to the Outdoor
Church of Cambridge, $150.00 to Bread for the orId and $150.00 to the Society
of St. Andrew. Our grants this year have been more limited in size and in number
because we have received less money than anticipated. Missions receives no funds
nom the general budget We receive funds specifically designated for Mission/Outreach.
We will continue to appreciate the funds you do make available and strive to
provide you the "best bang for the buck" that is possible.
WEB SITE
Take a look at the new and improved Missions portion of the church's web site.
We've updated the text and we've added pictures. We think its "kinda neat"!
DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that: the salary of a full-time minimum wage earner in 2007 was
$12,168?
The cost to rent a 1-bedroom home in Boston was $24,000.

Senior High Mission TripAugust 17-24 |
Senior High Students will be travelling to Alamosa CO, August 17 through August 24, to work at Habitat for Humanity and the La Puente Shelter. They will also be taking one fun day in the largest intermountain valley in the world and perhaps seeing the Great Sand Dunes National Monument.
While you may not think of Colorado as a needy place, we have found that the homeless in Colorado are no less homeless than the homeless in New York City. Folks live on the riverbank of the Rio Grande river digging caves in the side of the riverbank for shelter. Homeless shelters in this rural area are 120-150 miles apart. Homelessness is less the result of factories closing and more the result of family farms failing often put out of business by corporate farms. Most government funding goes to places you'd expect, the big cities, not to places like Alamosa, a town of 8,000 - one fifth the size of Billerica. The summers are short here and the winter's long and cold. There is no public transportation. This is not an easy place to be homeless or poor. We hope to share what we have with the people in Alamosa and bring hope and love from the First Congregational Church in Billerica. Thank you for your support in our effort to prepare for this ministry. We are really excited!!

Sunday School curriculum surveys have been distributed to the parents and teachers in the classrooms. If you have not received one, please see your child's teacher for a copy or print out a copy by clicking on the above links. Surveys are due by June 1st and should be given to your child's teacher or placed in the RE Committee mailbox. Please take the time to complete the survey. Your comments and recommendations are important as we make revisions to the curriculum. Any questions or concerns, please contact Lynn Gaudet 978-667-2008 or Shannon Fisher 978-663-1848.
Children's Sunday is June 8th. This will be the last class before the summer. The children have been working hard in preparation for the service. This will be their opportunity to demonstrate some of the teachings they learned and to celebrate all of their hard work this past year. Please join us in Dale Hall after the service for refreshments.
June 8th will also be the last Sunday the children's choir will sing before the summer. They had a wonderful year and worked very hard. It was a pleasure to have them sing during some of the services. Choir practices will begin again in the fall on Sundays from 9:30 A.M. to 1 0:00 A.M. in the Chapel. Date to be announced. All children who are interested are welcome to join. For more information, please contact April Goss-Baker 978-670-6035.
Sunday school will commence on September 14th. The RE Committee is currently looking for volunteers to assist with the Sunday school program for next fall. We are looking for teachers (weekly or every other week), substitute teachers, classroom helpers, hall monitors and nursery coverage. As a congregation, we have pledged to raise our children with the values and religious teachings of the church. In order to continue this commitment, we need your help. There are a great number of dedicated disciples in this school who want to learn, and an extra pair of hands is always welcome in assisting us to provide the best religious education possible. Would you consider being part of our Sunday school family? You may find that it is very rewarding and fun. Any questions, please contact Pat Rogers 978-663-8121 or the RE Committee.
The RE Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the individuals who devoted their time and worked hard throughout the year to support the Sunday school. We would like to thank everyone who helped out by being hall monitors or filled in as a substitute / helper in the classrooms. We would also like to thank April Goss-Baker and June Gibelli for their work with the children's choir, Deb MacEachern for her work with the youth groups, and Barbara Daverin and Brent Davis for their work with the high school class mission trip. A special thank you to all the teachers who devoted their time to teaching and lesson preparation and to the nursery staff who took great care of the little ones. Lastly, a very special thank you to Pat Rogers for all her time, dedication and hard work with running the Sunday school program and to Fran Rogers for being there to help with all the little things that were needed (and there were many). Without so many dedicated people to help, we would not have been able to run the School program for our children. Thank you again for your dedication and support. We wish you a safe and happy summer and hope to see you again in the fall.
God Bless,
The RE Committee

So
What's Your Excuse? The Diaconate is trying to make it easier for everyone to wear a name tag And we want to eliminate as many of the excuses that for not wearing them as possible.
For example:
"I don't like putting a pin through my clothes."
Ask and your holder will be changed to one with a clip or one that hangs over your head."I lost mine."
Ask and you will receive a new one."The color clashes with my tie"
Let us know what color you want and we will make one of that color."I want one that expresses my individuality"
We have some other designs that you can choose from, or supply us with what you want as a background and we will make one with that background."I forgot and left it on my bureau"
You can fill out a temporary one, and we will make a second one. Eventually the pile of name tags on the bureau will get so high that you won't forget!
Remember: Wear your name tags for others as you would want them to wear
one for you.

Next Meeting Wednesday, June 18, 12:30 P.M.
Now that summer months are here, maybe you (youth, moms, dads, or seniors), would like to experience visiting our homebound members. If you would like to join any of our shepherds in visiting, please let them know. It is such a rewarding venture!
Our present shepherds are Donna. Bailey, Betty & Dennis Blanchette, Christa Brown, Pat Hefler, Glenda Lovegrove, Mildred McCauley, Audrey Schwartz, and Barbara George. (978-667-7335)
Did you know there are options available as to how you or your loved one says their final "good byes"? Hospice offers many choices as to how the process may help the most terminally ill. The director of Sawtelle House, Pam Kumph, presented their program to the Lay Shepherds. We were impressed with the support and palliative care that Hospice offers, including attention of spiritual needs. We encourage everyone to be aware of this service for ourselves, families and others. Pamphets can be picked up on the table in the sanctuary or by contacting:
Sawtelle Family Hospice House
320 Haverhill St., Reading, MA 01867.
If anyone is interested in a program regarding ways in which to "get things in order," please let your Lay Shepherds know.

Music
Notes A few notes from your Music Committee. . . .
The official choir season is quickly drawing to a close. We are looking for volunteers willing to sing solos, duets, trios, you name-it! Please see or call Elliot Brown (781) 273-1819 or Jackie Phippen (978) 663;e'264 if you would be willing to sing or play an instrument during anyone or more of our Sunday warship services during the summer months. We need your help! All ages encouraged.
With Memorial Day upon us, it seems a fitting time of year to remember loved ones with a memoriam or honorarium. This is a nice way to remember special people, both living and deceased. Your gift not only provides recognition for a loved one, but helps cover the cost of our new electronic organ.
Gifts can be made by putting your check or cash in the envelopes that will be provided in the pew racks each Sunday. Then just write on the envelope the name of the person whom you are remembering or honoring. Please place the envelope in the offering plate during the offering.Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
Also in the works is a fundraiser in which you may purchase keys and stops. Watch for our replica of the organ to appear at church during the summer with details of our plan.
Our organist and temporary choir director, Elliott Brown, will be holding a workshop on sight-reading music during the summer. If you'd like to attend, please contact Elliot at (781) 273-1819.
Please try to help us come up with a couple of fun fundraising ideas to help pay for our new organ. Any and all suggestions are welcome. See a member of the Music Committee.
The Music Committee is busily working on preparations for interviewing potential choir director candidates. We have listened to the congregation and think we have a good feel for what you are looking for in a music program for our church.
Sincerely,
The Music Committee

At our October 2007 Congregational Meeting, I opened that meeting with the Behavioral Covenant developed from our Walking in the Way of Peace program. This covenant was created over a few meetings by the attendees of this church and reflects what they felt was important for our church, and is not just something handed down from Walking in the Way, the UCC, or other organizations. The tenants presented in this behavioral covenant were first used during the Sabbath Day House issue and served the church well.
Some people had not seen the covenant before our October meeting and they requested a copy. Please keep this and refer to it as you see the need.
Remembering our purpose as a Church and our Biblical grounding, we covenant to be peacemakers by
Speaking...
The Truth...
In Love...
As a community of faith...
Use these well and God Bless,
