From the Minister

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Years ago, when empowerment was the buzz word of the workplace, I read a book that suggested that we listen carefully to what we say and learn to use positive statements. The premise was this, if we regularly say, "I'm sorry, I can't help you with that," or "No I can't, won't, don't…" then you will believe that you can't, you won't, and you don't. Although we might not believe everything that other people say, we do believe what we say. This is the same point that Norman Vincent Peale was making in the Power of Positive Thinking. When we say "yes," "yes I can," "yes I will," "yes I do," we are empowered to move forward in a positive direction.

This winter we spent time looking at how to cultivate joy in our lives, a deep joy based in the firm foundation of our faith, not the fleeting happiness dictated by our moods. The spiritual practice of gratitude-noticing, appreciating, and celebrating the blessings in life deepen our foundation of faith.

In our Easter joy we celebrated the good news of Jesus Christ-love conquers all, even death. As we live into this truth our faith and joy deepen, and our words should express this reality. When "Praise be to God" and "Thank you Lord" spring from our lips we acknowledge God working in our lives. When we recognize God's blessings we become more and more open to the possibilities in our lives. It is a cycle that brings us deeper, helps us, as The Little Monk says, "to listen deeply in a shallow world." To have this deep well of faith our words need to reflect our spiritual desire. Words of love, mercy, forgiveness, and thanksgiving must pour from our mouths. As Frank Thomas says, when people experience the assurance of God's grace "they like to never quit praisin' God."

Let that be us this summer-people who like to never quit praisin' God! If we praise God for the blessings of summer: the sunshine and the shade, the flowers and the vegetables, especially the strawberries and the watermelon, and the barefooted joy, our wells will run deep. And we know that deep wells never run dry when there is a drought. So let us be careful about what we say, and how we say it, because even the greatest skeptic believes the words of their own mouth. Let us speak words that build up. Words that build up our faith, words that build our loved ones, words that build up our neighbors, build up our community, build up our world. And before you know it people will be saying, "They're the folks that like to never quit praisin' God." And for that the world will be a better place.

Summertime and joy and blessings to all!

Katherine

John 17:6-11

"5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. - James 3:5-12 (NIV)"

Thoughts for Reflection

The letter from James to the early churches gives moral and ethical advice. He is holding people accountable for how they live and how they relate to each other.

Consider the power of the tongue, and the incongruity of the positive and negative things we say. Listen to what you are saying. When is your tongue a fire and when is it fresh water? How can controlling our tongues be a spiritual discipline?

Open and Affirming Meeting Notes

We held our first meeting to explore the process of becoming an Open and Affirming congregation in the United Church of Christ. Almost 20 people gathered to watch a video that discussed three churches who had gone through the educational process to become Open and Affirming. After the video, we had a brainstorming session to come up with questions and concerns that we felt needed to be addressed in the upcoming educational series.

The list is below. If anyone would like to view the video, please contact Jean Button 978-663-7807. Other members of the committee that would welcome your input are Tammy Potter, Barbara Daverin and Catie Button. Please also feel free to speak with any of the Deacons.

What does affirming mean?
Why do we need to do this?
Is this idea theologically correct?
What does the Bible say?
We need speakers or people who can help us.
We should consider whether we can afford speakers.
Is there indifference in our congregation?
We should consider that it's not always theology; it's about being a person.
Need a balanced committee - by gender, by opinion.
Focus on an educated vote vs and emotional one.
It might be helpful to have one on one conversation.
We should investigate congregations where this was not successful
or was a painful process.
Can we discuss being affirming for all populations?
Would this work well as cottage meetings?
Concerns about turnout; will folks be engaged, there too much apathy?
Investigate % of population in Billerica that is GLBT
We need to know our congregation and how people feel about this issue.
We should have the right structures in place to do this.
How will our church change? What will be different?

Stewards of Good News

As the Stewardship Committee prepares the Stewardship Campaign for the fall we offer you this reflection from UCC minister Rochelle Stackhouse.

"Parthians, Medes, Elamites…" Acts 2:8

"I like to think of the Day of Pentecost as the first recorded use of social media by the church! Instead of keeping the joy of the Spirit to themselves, the disciples were compelled, impelled and thrown pell-mell into communicating with lots of people they don't know in languages with which they are unfamiliar! You think learning the new languages of Twitter or Facebook is hard, try Parthian! Those disciples told the story of Jesus in new languages so that others might know the joy, power, forgiveness and love of God they had come to know as they worked with Jesus. They trusted the Spirit, and the Spirit gave them the power and courage to communicate in ways they had never imagined.

"The Spirit can work in cyberspace in the 21st century just as effectively as in a courtyard in Jerusalem full of strangers in the first century. What the Spirit needs is willing disciples to tell the story and welcome those who seek. We need to remember that before we are stewards of church buildings or church budgets, we are stewards of a story, of grace, of hope. There are people out there in the streets of our cities and towns waiting to hear it. How can your church work to share the good news in languages that may be outside your familiar comfort zone? "

Your Stewardship Committee prays that your summer will be filled with the grace and blessings of the Spirit.

The Outreach Committee Report

2011 Outreach Members Members: Jackie Gullage, Terry & Steve Lewis, Don Lovegrove, Nita Owin, Bob & Linda Miner (co-chairs)

Spotlight on: Feeding America (formerly a.k.a. America's second Harvest)
We support this group because they are a clearing-house, a supply center for so many feeding groups. They regularly have foundations and philanthropies with matching grants and our most recent $150 contribution was multiplied to provide $2,250 worth of food. In 2010 they "rescued" 3,000,0000,000 lbs. of food (yes, that's billion) from fields, orchards, trade shows, festivals … any place where food was left over and about to be thrown out or left to rot. The money you give to Outreach really goes a long, long way.

Pantry Collection
Our pantry collection is down. May 1 brought in 35 items and last year we averaged 120 items/month. It's a result of the economic times and the fact that people at this church contribute so much to so many causes; you can't give to everything, every time. However, our F.C.C.B. pantry is now fully stocked so we can supply those within our own congregation who are temporarily in need and "split" our monthly collection between restocking our own pantry and sharing with the community pantry. Summer collections will be June 5, July 3, & Aug.7.

Did You Know -
a. In 2009 Americans spent $10.5 billion dollars on plastic surgery. Is that really the best use of our resources??
b. 1 in 8 people in Massachusetts use food stamps, one of the first programs that will be
cut in the new federal budget
c. 1% of the U.S. population possesses 90% of its wealth
d. a 50% income tax bracket on income OVER 2 million/yr. would raise 60 billion dollars
in revenue.

Senior Sunday School Class Mission Trip

We're on our Way!!

The Senior High Class would like to thank you all for once again supporting the class mission trip. This year we will be traveling to York, PA to work at Habitat for Humanity July 10-17. Please keep us in your prayers as we work to bring your love and support to families working to build their new homes. York Habitat is currently working on four homes and are thrilled to have us as volunteers and we are very happy to help them with this ambitious effort.

We could donate an additional $800 to the four Habitat families if we could find a 7 -8 passenger van to borrow instead of rent. If anyone would like to trade cars with me for the week, please let me know and maybe we can work out something.

music notes on staff graphic Notes from the Music Committee

Sound System

  • We are in the process of investigating modest improvements to the sound system that can be built upon later.

  • We really appreciate all the assistance in running the current system during services that Jesse Dutton has done. Unfortunately for us, but good for him, he is moving, and we need volunteers to be trained and take over this important function.

Instruments

  • The grand piano will be " regulated" during the summer to improve the responsiveness of its keys and help reduce the wear and tear on Brendan's wrists.

The tuner tells us that all the pianos really should be replaced. (Something to think about: If anyone has a piano or knows of one that might be donated, we would need to check it out to be sure it is better than the existing one before accepting the donation.)

  • Because there has been money in a fund from the Christus players drama group, for the pipe organ we are looking at what, if any, repairs make sense. We are blessed that Brendan is so skilled an organist and has a deep love for the historical organs.

  • We are also blessed that we have an excellent modern electronic organ and are actively pursuing the additional training promised to make sure Brendan can use all of its many features. We may also institute another training for "organ button pushers", who are able to make the organ play certain pieces when we don't have an organist.

Junior Choir

  • We wish Katherine Norman great success at college and are so thankful for her faithful accompaniment of the junior choir for the past several years. She is hard to replace. While we will continue to encourage student musicians to play occasionally, either on their own or with the choir, accompanist is an advanced skill. The junior choir is an important part of our music ministry. So, the music committee is proposing to hire an accompanist on a trial basis for the fall. Then this can be considered on a more permanent basis at the Church budget meeting next year. In addition to supporting the junior choir, this position would allow for expansion off the music ministry such as duets, back up for Brendan, inclusion of more music into the Sunday School program. For instance, it would let Brendan go downstairs to do an activity with the children while the assistant covered the doxology or a hymn. We would be connecting our "upstairs and downstairs churches" more and reaching more of the " multiple intelligences" , multisensory learning for the children.

Summer

  • We are looking forward to expanding the musical offerings. If anyone feels moved to be part of that, speak to Rev. Katherine, Brendan or a music committee member.
