Church Calendar for November 2008

From the Minister

Dear Friends,

Do you remember how the story of Moses ends? After 40 years of trials and tribulations, trying to lead the Israelite people through the wilderness, finally he can see the Promised Land on the other side of the Jordan. But before he can cross with his people, Moses dies. And there, apart from his community, he's buried for all of time.

I've always considered that a poignant story for interim ministers as we come to the end of an interim period. After dealing with all the turmoil associated with the start of an interim, working

hard to bring the church up to speed and prepare it for a new minister, and developing close relationships with many members of the congregation, we suddenly stop and wave goodbye to our parishioners as they continue on into their future. The good news for God's people is that a new leader always arises to accompany them across the Jordan. And that's the important part of the story. It reminds us that a church's life never depends on anyone human being. AU leaders come and go. What matters is God's faithful presence through every pastorate, interim or settled.

After Candidating Sunday is over we'll begin in earnest to bring this interim period to a close. My last service in this church will be November 30 (though I believe we'll be doing a formal farewell on November 23, the week prior. During the next month I'll be meeting with committees and chairpersons to take leave, working with the incoming minister to bring her up to speed, and most importantly saying my personal goodbyes.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve. Thanks especially to all who've worked hard to help the church during this interim by staying involved and staying positive. Thank you also to the staff for your support and friendship. God speed as you cross the Jordan!

Blessings, Sharon

See you at Candidating weekend.

CANDIDATING WEEKEND -- OCTOBER 25 & 26!!!

Notes from the Diaconate

Change is in the air here!  We are excited to be coming to the end of our interim period and are beginning to think about our goals for the future.

One of the ways we are doing this is by planning a deacons’ retreat.   On November 15th our board of deacons will come together at the UCC Conference Center in Framingham.  Our hope is to use this time to do some forward thinking, talk about the role of deacons in the church and plan ways in which we can better serve our members.  We have realized that most of our meetings consist of day to day planning and that if we wanted to really explore and expand our options for the future, we would need a greater chunk of time to do this.  We invite present and past deacons to join us on November 15th.  If you would like to come, please call Glenda Lovegrove (978-667-3596) and let her know you will be attending.

We thank all of you who have been willing to assist as greeters, readers and the call to worship.  It is refreshing to see so many of you participating in our service.

Jean Button, secretary

Trustees

Committee Chairpersons, please complete your budget requests and submit them to the Trustees as soon as possible for consideration in the upcoming 2009 budget year.

The Trustees are still looking for those who wish to make a donation or memorial gift to help defray the costs of the landscaping completed earlier this summer. Your donation or gift may be placed in the offering plate.

The cap for the retaining wall will be installed to complete that project.

The Coke machine recently moved from Dale Hall to HP entrance will be in service once a new key is obtained and it is stocked.  The proceeds will be used for The General Fund for the church.

Last call for anyone interested in the surplus Sunday school furniture.  If it is not claimed, it will be removed in November.  As always, contributions are welcome but not mandatory.

The definition of a “member” vs. “non member” regarding the Church fees for room rentals is currently being redefined to be fair to all parties.

Ongoing projects:

  • New church security key & keycard system coming soon.
  • The EXIT signs and emergency lighting are being upgraded for the safety of the church family.
  • Moving name tag board to first floor across from mailboxes.  If you are able to assist in doing this please contact one of your Church trustees.
  • Clearing of stage in Dale Hall.

Fuel Assistance
If you think you MIGHT qualify for fuel assistance for this winter, contact Community Teamwork at 877-451-1082 and make an appointment to apply.  Assistance is based on income and varies based on the size of family.  For example, $28,000 for 2, $20,000 for 1, and $35,000 for 3.  Appointments are held at 45 Kirk Street in Lowell and you must apply in person.  It takes 4-8 weeks for approval and you must document your income for 4 weeks.

Pantry
What a super collection for October!   You donated 133 items. With what are traditionally our 2 best months of the year in front of us, we are on track to set a record.

Recycling
We continue to work on recycling with cans, bottles, and paper being collected every Sunday to be recycled on Monday.  Much of the lighting at the church is already fluorescent and we are encouraging the use of CFL’s as replacement bulbs wherever the beauty of the church interior will not be negatively affected.  National Grid has performed an energy audit and we await their plan for improvements.

Contributions
In your name we have purchased 4 cases of Fair Traded Coffee to be shipped to Holy Joe’s Café in Baghdad.  Holy Joe’s is an interfaith outreach program to front line troops by chaplains of various faiths.  Each chaplain provides 20-25 worship services each week and then provides coffee for the troops in an informal setting.  Counseling and a degree of relaxation make this a hit with the literally thousands of troops who visit a Holy Joe’s Café each week.

We have also contributed $100.00 to the Save Darfur Coalition.  This is intended o help victims of state sponsored genocide by the government of Sudan.  It will purchase food, blankets, medical care; whatever is most needed.  Please pray for action by the international community to end this genocide and to bring President Bashir and others to justice.

Did You Know?
Did you know that the average American family spends about 7% of its income on food?  Those at the poverty line spend about 30% of their income on food.

The Annual Ingathering is November 16th.   We will be asking the Sunday school children to bring in non-perishable items to make up Thanksgiving baskets that will be donated to families in need.   A notice will be given out in Sunday school prior to the date with more specific information.

We are still in need of volunteers for the nursery and hall monitoring.  A sign up sheets are posted on the Sunday school bulletin and on the nursery bulletin.  Parents, please consider signing up for one Sunday for either the nursery or hall monitoring.  Thank you to those who have already made commitments to help.  Your time and support is greatly appreciated.

Stewardship Notes

It was heartwarming on Stewardship Sunday to see worshippers come forward with their pledges for next year.  The Stewardship committee has worked hard to make members aware of the financial challenges we face next year and it appears that many of us are rising to the occasion.

Unfortunately there is still much to be done.  During the fall congregational meeting following Stewardship Sunday the Treasurer pointed out that only 50% of expenses were being met by pledges, the remainder being financed by investments and facilities rentals.  It was also clear from watching the pledge ceremony that most persons who received the Stewardship mailing had not responded.  If you are one of those non-responders, we urge you to prayerfully consider the blessings that God has bestowed on you and to make the appropriate response.  As you consider these issues we ask us to remember that Stewardship is “What I do with all that I have, after I say I believe.”

Notes from the Music Committee

The Music Committee has some news! We have hired Ginny O’Connell as our new Choir Director. Ginny is a full-time high school teacher and also attends graduate school. She begins this week and we look forward to getting to know her better. Choir rehearsals will now be held on Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. due to Ginny’s school schedule. Please consider joining the choir! Unfortunately we will be losing a few or our faithful choir members who are unable to attend rehearsals because of the change of rehearsal night. We are very sad about this.

Thank you to Elliot Brown for being kind enough to take over the choir director position this past year. Without him, we would have had a very difficult time keeping the continuity of the choir.

For those of you who attended the Organ Concert given by Roger Mansen of G. Paul Music in September, you were given quite a treat! Roger played a variety of music, demonstrating the capabilities of our new electronic organ. Thank you to all who helped with the planning, setting up and baking. It is appreciated!

Thanks to April Goss-Baker for her hard work in making the Children’s Choir such a success. The children did such a nice job singing for us on Sunday, October 19th. We look forward to hearing them sing again in November.

Notes from the Nominating Committee

sunriseThe Lord Wants to Use Your Talents
When you seek God's plan for your life, you can be sure that he will bless the work of your hands.
You are absolutely unique and irreplaceable in the eyes of God.  And you have been given talents and abilities that are yours alone, whether artistic, leadership, financial, organizational, musical, literary...The key to achieving satisfaction and success with your talents is to place them always at the service of God.

Ask for God's direction and pray for his guidance so that you may use your gifts fruitfully and fully in his eyes.  God has a specific plan for you, and he has equipped you for your journey.  Your responsibility is to seek his will for you and to allow him to perfect and refine your endowments until they are functioning as they were intended.

United Church of Christ News

The MA Conference Annual Meeting will vote on a proposal to sell a parcel of Conference property when it convenes in Worcester on October 31 - November 1.

At a recent meeting of the Northeast Area churches, Conference President Rev. Jim Antal called on churches to make the environment a major focus. He likened the importance of "green" issues to the issues of slavery and Civil Rights for the Church in times past. Phyllis Jennings and Rev. Goss attended.

This month NBC has debuted a documentary that takes viewers on a trip around the world to see how ordinary people share talents and time for a better world. Called "Connecting Threads," it is produced by the UCC in cooperation with other religious groups.

A proposal has been put forth to simplify and economize denominational governance through a new 88-member body to be called the United Church Board. The proposal will be submitted to 2009 General Synod.

In light of high fuel costs the UCC Executive Council has rescinded an earlier selection of Hawaii as the site for General Synod 2011.

It's never too late: Phyllis Winslow, age 80, has been approved for ordination pending call in the Pilgrim Association of the MA Conference. She started seminary at 74.

In the wake of damages caused by the 2008 hurricane season, the UCC has issued an appeal for $250,000 and 1,001 cleanup buckets to support relief and rebuilding efforts.

On November 20, well known author Bill McKibben will speak on climate issues at Plymouth Congregational Church. He is sponsored by the MA Conference and others. To register contact Tina Clarke at tdarke@cleanwater.org.

Can I Say the Lord's Prayer? thanksgiving

  • I cannot say OUR
If my faith has no room for other people and their faith.

    I cannot say FATHER
If I do not demonstrate this relationship In my life.

I cannot say HALLOWED BE THY NAME
If I who am called By God's name am not holy.

I cannot say THY WILL BE DONE
If I am unwilling or resentful of having it in my own life.

I cannot say ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN
If I am unwilling or resentful of having it in my own life.

I cannot say GIVE US OUR DAILY BREAD
If I ignore the genuine needs of my neighbor.

I cannot say FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS

I cannot say DELIVER US FROM EVIL
If I fear what my neighbors or friends may say or do.

I cannot say THINE IS THE GLORY

    I cannot say FOREVER
