"When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed
with him in glory." (Colossians 3:4)
Greetings in the name of the Risen Christ!
The good news is this; Christ has been raised from the dead and has broken the
bonds of death offering us the hope of eternal life, and Christ's resurrection
invites us to be reborn and made alive living resurrected lives. We are transformed
in Christ. Just as new life breaks forth from the barren ground this spring,
Easter blesses us with the grace to be transformed.
The epistle to the church in Colossae tells us to put off our old selves-let our anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive speech, lying, immorality, and greed die (Col 3:5-8.) In the knowledge and faith of Christ's resurrection we are to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, forbearance, forgiveness and love (Col 3:13-14.)
Living as a disciple of the Risen Christ means living a resurrected life.
This changes our daily lives, giving us a new and improved outlook on life.
We are new and improved in our relationships with our spouses, parents, children,
family, friends and coworkers. We are new and improved in our care for ourselves
and each other. We are able to love better and forgive easier.
Christ within us, when shared, becomes Christ among us. Christ among us, when
shared, becomes Christ for the world. Christ for the world increases God's Kingdom
on earth, allowing justice and mercy to be known. This is resurrection.
Let us pray God's Kingdom come with our whole hearts this Easter and witness resurrection in our lives, church, community and the world.
Praise be to God that we are resurrected to a new life of joy and peace through
Jesus the Risen Christ.
Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen indeed!
Grace upon grace,
Katherine

The Music Committee submitted a draft sound system project objectives to the Trustees. Their initial findings noted some of the electronics used in the current sound system are out of date; other items are OK at this time. The Music Committee plan is to form a small task group with Jesse Dutton as the lead to meet with vendors and discuss our needs. Proposal will be sought and reviewed by the Music committee with a recommendation to the Trustees for their review and consideration. If possible, a plan would be shared with the congregation at the May business meeting.
On-going maintenance includes reviewing the yearly maintenance of the Church's heating systems and the need of replacing a few parts to the sump-pump configuration. A special thank you to Gene Guild for re-programming the power-on/off timers for the stained glass windows. A new cleated water-hog carpet has been order for the rear church entrance.
Your ongoing comments or suggestions are welcomed. Please place a written note in the Trustees mailbox along with your idea(s) to correct any issue. If there is a project you would like to see completed or that you would like to complete as a group please let us know.
Based on actual figures through mid-March - below is an estimated Expense vs. Income Graph through Mar 31

As you are aware, the Nominating Committee is looking at the by-laws, principally to make it easier to fill positions. If you have comments on the by-laws please drop them in the Nominating Committee box for consideration. (If you already have provided comments, there is no need to duplicate them.) We will be making a report on the matter to the congregation at the Spring meeting.
We are still looking for someone who would like to help in getting the word out about the things that are happening in our Church to the media. If you have an interest in cable TV or the print media, let someone on the Nominating Committee or Reverend Adams know.
And thanks to all who are contributing their time and talents this year.

Special
From the Outreach Committee
Have you ever noticed the sub-lettering on the side of a U-Haul truck? "An Adventure in Moving" (Yeah … right!)
On Friday, March 5, a few of us traipsed through 6 towns collecting furniture generously donated by several congregations and moved it to Lawrence where we had secured an apartment for a soon-to-be arriving refugee family from Iraq. The Refugee Immigration Ministry (of which we are a part) has agreed to sponsor several families and this is the first with which we are helping. By mid afternoon we began unloading and settling up the furniture in preparation for the family's arrival on Wednesday, March 10.
On the 10th, the family of 5 first entered their kitchen where they found a wooden gate-leg table, microwave, flatware for 8, electric mixer & bowl, wooden block holding 6 carving knives - all donated by our church. Additionally, there is a toaster, cleaning supplies, pots & pans, dishes and food staples plus the refrigerator has fruit and vegetables and frozen dinners in the top freezer.
Next into their living room where they find (and learn to use) the thermostat which controls the baseboard heating for the apartment. This room has a couch, love seat, 2 stuffed chairs, a rug, a table with lamp and bookcases (no books yet) all from our church. There are additional end tables, lamps and curtains.
Upstairs are 2 bedrooms; 1 large with 3 beds for the kids with new sheets, pillows, and 1 blanket each. There are 2 bureaus and although the closet space seems inadequate, they do not possess enough clothes yet to fill the small space provided. The small bedroom has a queen bed for the parents with adequate bedding, 1 bureau and ample closet space.
There is a small bath with towels from us hanging on a towel rack behind the door and ample extra towels and cleaning materials stored in the closet. It has a sink, toilet, tub, and shower and they are all "indoors".
Now granted - this is Lawrence - it's a 4-room apartment for a family of 5. Many of us might find it a bit cramped. But this family has been living just over 4 years … in a refugee camp … in Jordan… IN A HOVEL! Please believe me, they are THRILLED!
By your constant and generous support of the activities of the Outreach Committee, you reaffirm the asked and answered question in Micah: "What does the Lord ask of you but - to do justice ---". As I've said before, sometimes you really get it!

APPRECIATE YOUR DONATIONS!!!!!!!

Billerica Food Pantry
The March collection for the Billerica Food Pantry numbered 119 items! Thank
you for your generosity!
It has been brought to our committee's attention that there are members who would like to add their contributions to our Pantry collections, but due to physical limitations, cannot deliver their donations to and/or into the church. If you would like to arrange a "pickup", whereby someone stops at your house or meets you at your car on the applicable Sundays, please contact one of the following Outreach Committee members: Don Lovegrove@ 978-667-3596 * Stephen Lewis @ 978-670-1612 * Bob Miner @ 978-667-2961 * Jenny Carmichael @ 978-262-0251. Any one of us would be happy to assist you.
March Contributions
The Outreach Committee's focus for the March meeting was on charities that
focus on hunger relief. We voted on sending $400 each to The Society of Saint
Andrews and Project Bread. Both agencies are qualified to receive matching
funds from The Feinstein Foundation, via a program they run March through
April, called the Feinstein Challenge 2010.
One Great Hour of Sharing
The One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) Offering, administered by Wider Church
Ministries, is the refugee, relief and development fund of the United Church
of Christ. It provides support to people in more than eighty countries. The
collection for this fund was taken on March 14th and March 21st. For more
information regarding this collection, please visit online at www.ucc.org/oghs.
Looking forward
With hunger relief in mind, please remember the two following dates: Friday,
April 2nd and Sunday, May 2nd. April 2nd is the 28th Annual Greater Lowell
Walk for Hunger. This is a 13 mile walk to help eliminate hunger. They have
sent us extra forms, posted on our bulletin board, if you are interested in
participating in this worthwhile cause! May 2nd is Project Bread's annual
Walk for Hunger. Our church's own Bob Miner will be making the hike this year!

Religious
EducationThe Sunday school children will be putting together the service kits that will be sent to the Church World Service Organization to disaster areas for people in need. The processing fee to send each kit is $2.00. We are asking for donations of $2.00 to help defray the cost of sending the kits. We are still accepting items for the service kits. A complete list of the items to donate is posted in the hallway, next to the library. We thank all those who donated items for the service kits. If anyone is interested in donating the processing fee, please contact Pat Rogers or the RE Committee.
The RE Committee will be organizing Easter-themed activities for the children, on Palm Sunday, following the church service, in Dale Hall. Further information will be announced in the church bulletin.
The Flowering of the Cross service, on Easter Sunday, at 7am will be led by the PF.
There will be no Sunday school classes on Easter Sunday. There will also be no nursery coverage for the 7am and 9:30am service on Easter Sunday. Children will join their families upstairs for the church service. There will be nursery coverage available for the 11:00am service.
Children's Sunday will be on June 13th. Rehearsal for Children's Sunday will be June 12th at 9:00am. Information regarding specific details for each class will be given out during Sunday school class, in the near future.
We are looking for volunteers for hall monitoring. Please consider signing up for one Sunday. There are many Sundays that we do not have any volunteers and would greatly appreciate any help that could be offered. A sign-up sheet is posted on the Sunday school bulletin. Again, thank you to those who have already offered their help. Your time and support is greatly appreciated.
The RE Committee is currently looking for individuals who
would be interested in working with the children in PF next year. Anyone
who is interested, please contact the RE Committee for further details.

To be very honest, this is the one place out of all the places we looked at, that I did not want to go. It looks so hard, so needy, so difficult….but in spite of my trepidation, this is the place that was available for the week we chose…this is the place we are being called to care for and bring your love and support to.
We have a lot of work to do not only in raising money for
the trip but in learning how to help, how to understand, how to be sensitive
to the needs of this community, and how to show them they are not alone
and that there are others who care and love them even in far off places
like Billerica Mass.

Do you have items that have become clutter to you? The High School class is selling items via Craiglist as a way of raising funds for the upcoming Mission trip to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. The type of items that we've collected so far include a go-cart, a table and chair set, a basketball hoop and a fish tank. If you have things filling up the garage or the attic or the basement and don't know what to do with them, we do! Please contact Jenny Carmichael or Alex Montanez at 978-262-0251 or carmichael_jenny@yahoo.com or alexmontanez73@yahoo.com for more information.

Ah, Spring. We have had some glorious days leading up to the start of the season that remind us that April 15, the date by which we must file our income taxes, is rapidly approaching. For the procrastinators among us, (and I am usually in that group), there is a fair amount of fear approaching that date. "Will I be able to find all the forms and 1099's that were sent me?" "What new wrinkles have been added to the tax code impact me?" "Did I have enough withheld or did I pay enough estimated taxes?" "Will I have enough time to get everything done in time?" Those are just a few of the questions that we can face.
At the end of the process we have checks to write or we wait with anticipation for a refund. And when a refund comes, what we do with it (and what we do with other cash windfalls during our lifetime) tells us a lot about our own attitudes toward stewardship.
There is a temptation to immediately "blow it all" on an impulse purchase. And occasionally, in modest amounts, impulse spending is not that bad. There an instinct to hoard the funds. But the Parable of the Talents that Jesus told us (Matthew 25: 14-30) instructs us in how to best use those windfalls, invest them and make them grow.
So if you are one of those lucky ones who will be receiving an unexpectedly large refund or some other windfall this year, consider investing a portion of it in your church, that we together may better do God's work in this world.
Thank you,
Andrew Jennings on behalf of the Stewardship Committee.
During the Easter season we encourage the congregation to use the addresses
below and send a short note or greeting card to these people while they
are away from home. It means so much to them and their families. Aim-Hi
and the Confirmation class will be sending packages to them.
If anyone in the congregation knows of other young people who are serving our country overseas and feels comfortable providing us with their addresses, please contact Aim Hi through June Orne at 603-883-6732, (june62123@aol.com, or call the church office at 978-663-8433.

We are taking part in the Billerica American Cancer Society Relay for Life on June 12 and 13th. There's a good chance you've heard of it - it's the largest cancer-fighting movement in the world. There will be more than 230 Relays happening throughout New England this year, and more than 5,000 across the U.S., each uniting communities against a common enemy: cancer.
Our team (Candle Wishes) will be cheering the cancer survivors who kick off the event by taking the first lap around the track. Then, everyone else will join in and the goal is to keep at least one member of our team on the track all night. Lighting the way will be hundreds of luminaries - lighted bags bearing the names of loved ones who have faced a cancer diagnosis.
Relay is a time of reflection, a time to celebrate survivorship, and a time to pledge to take some kind of action to fight a disease that roughly 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with in their lifetimes. It might be a pledge to wear sunscreen, quit smoking, volunteer with the American Cancer Society to drive patients to and from treatment, or remind a loved one to get their annual mammogram.

In April we resume our regular meeting time - 12:30 PM, April 14th, the 2nd Wednesday of the month. (During Lent we met after the Lenten Service).
The Lay Shepherds are dedicated to assisting the Deacons and the Pastor in serving the needs of the congregation. As described in our church bylaws, we serve "those who are in want, troubled, sick, shut-in, or faced with emergencies." In fact, we try to follow all of Christ's precepts in the scriptural verses that include the passage that serves as our church's motto, "…for I was a stranger and you welcomed me." The rest of the passage in Matthew 25: 35-38 reads:
"…for I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink….I was naked and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."
During the Easter Season the Lay Shepherds assist in delivering flowers and meals to many of the people to whom we minister. The Outreach Committee prepares the meals and the Deacons purchase and prepare the beautiful Tulips donated by many in the church. Deliveries are made on Palm Sunday. Want to help this year? Just let us know.
We'd love to have more of you join us - anyone who feels called to do this work. All it requires is a willing, sympathetic, humble spirit, and an openness to helping others. Those of us who have visited are happy to bring new Shepherds with us on visits until you feel ready to go on your own. Even if you don't feel ready to visit, there are other ways to serve - making phone calls, writing cards, making and delivering gifts of food or flowers, or just joining us as we pray for those in need.
If anyone is interested in serving as a Shepherd, but can not
make the afternoon meetings, please speak to Dennis Blanchette, and, trust
us, your help can be used and directed. Or if you are aware of anyone who
would like to be remembered or needs a friendly visit or card, please let
one of our Shepherds know. Dennis Blanchette has agreed to lead this group
during the next couple of months, while Barbara George is in Florida. He can
be reached at 978-667-3470.

The following volunteers are helping our church begin to "GO GREEN": Jenny Carmichael, April Goss-Baker, Lynne Hildreth, Phyllis Jennings, Terry Lewis, Jack & Rita McIsaac, Linda Miner, Alex Montanez, "Phip" Phippin, and Shirley Sprague.
Our first goal is to encourage all church attendees to help recycle clean paper, bottles and cans by placing these items is the appropriately labeled bins. You will find paper-recycling bins in all classrooms, in the parlor and kitchen, as well as in Alison and Pastor Katherine's offices. Bottle and can recycling and refundable bins are located both in the kitchen and parlor.
Each week after church a member of our task force will collect all recyclable items and place the container outside for Monday's collection. John Beaton has generously offered to return the container to Rm. 4 following the collection. Bob Miner has offered to handle the refundable bottles and cans with any proceeds going towards helping defray the expense of purchasing Equal Exchange coffee and tea used during our coffee hour. For this to be successful, your help is needed and deeply appreciated.
NOTE: Please put used cups, kleenex, and paper towels in a trash container and all clean paper in one of the many paper recycling bins. Doing so will greatly help in our collection process.
If any parishioners have clean egg cartons they are willing to donate to help make the Marshall Middle School library more accessible to students, please place them in the box located in the downstairs hallway under the mailboxes. The cartons are placed behind a row of books so the books don't slip back on the shelves. Linda Miner will collect them each Sunday and put them to immediate use.
It is truly wonderful to be part of a church that is excited to begin the process of "GOING GREEN" and helping to preserve and wisely use the world that God gave us.

Help! We are looking for a few good men and women who might like to help with one-time or occasional tasks. We know that some people are unable to commit to a committee, but that they understand the need for many hands. See if you have some time to offer for one or another of the tasks below.
Please help. Alas, there is no monetary reward, but you will have our heartfelt appreciation and, of course, many stars in your crown. |
Thank you to Audrey Schwartz, Erick Andersson, and Edna McDewell
