LAY SHEPHERDING

The Lay Shepherding Committee was formed to assist the Minister and/or the Diaconate in one of the most important congregational services - visiting and keeping in touch with members who are house-bound. Their need for contact with the church through visitations by the Minister or members is of utmost importance. Through these visits, changes in the shut-ins' needs can be reported to the proper authorities for help and guidance, and can keep the Diaconate aware of those who need assistance.

Meetings

The Committee meets monthly so that those who are doing the shepherding can keep the Committee Chair and the Minister aware of the present conditions of those whom the Committee visits.

A report is sent to the Diaconate several times a year to inform them of the progress of visitations. Reports are also published in the Lantern so that the Congregation will know who is involved with this program, who is being served, and where they are located. These reports are intended to encourage other members of the congregation to join in the visitations and/or send cards or make telephone calls.

Guidelines

The Committee uses these guidelines when communicating and sharing with our homebound members, and we recommend them to anyone who wants to help with this satisfying and important work:

1. Make a phone call prior to a visit to arrange a mutually convenient time.

2. When visiting, don't worry about what to say; you'll find that their having someone there who will listen is a special gift in itself.

3. Try to establish a one-on-one relationship so that a familiar, continuing connection is made.

4. Write down or give them your name and phone number so they can contact you when necessary.

5. Try to make phone calls to them on a regular basis.

6. Send notes, cards or emails as appropriate.

7. Be patient.

8. Wear a name tag.

Church Membership is not required.
