The Outdoor Church
On June 27th, 2010 representatives of the Outreach Committee of the First Congregational Church made their second annual pilgrimage to the Cambridge Outdoor Church, where they carried donations of white socks and sandwiches from the First Congregational Church of Billerica's generous congregants.
The Outdoor Church is a ministry to homeless men and women in Cambridge. Short prayer services are held in Porter Square, outside the T station, at 9:00 am and on the Cambridge Common at 1:00 pm, every Sunday, regardless of weather or season.
Following services, lay and ordained ministers carry donated sandwiches, juice and socks around Porter, Harvard, and Central Squares, where a meal and communion are offered to any homeless person encountered. The Outdoor Church is supported by member churches of the Harvard Square Clergy Association of which First Church is one. In early 2005, Rev. Jedediah Mannis, minister to the Outdoor Church, became an affiliate staff member at First Church.
